Stephan Brooks
Program Director, Brooks Debate Institute
Stephan Brooks began his forensic (speech/debate) career competing for the nationally recognized program at James Logan High School in 2001 as a 9th grader under the guidance of NSDA 6-Diamond Hall of Fame coach, Dr. Tommie Lindsey Jr. During his junior year he would fall in love with a newly introduced NSDA event: "Ted Turner Debate" (now known as "Public Forum Debate") after winning his school's 2004 \& 2005 MLK Jr. Invitationals. After coaching back-to-back CHSSA California State Champions in Public Forum for Logan in 2007 \& 2008, Stephan would begin his full-time career as "Coach Brooks," spending the next several years building/coaching several Bay Area debate programs (Hopkins MS, Mission San Jose HS, Archbishop Mitty HS, Amador Valley HS, & Miller MS) and instructing summer debate camps at both Cal & Stanford.
In 2013 he founded The Brooks Academy with several James Logan alumni, a private speech and debate program in Fremont, CA that primarily served middle school students hailing from schools without forensics programs. The Brooks Academy would go onto to compete at the NSDA's Middle School National Tournament, capture its "Overall School of Excellence" top honors three straight years (2013, 2014, & 2015) and have seven of its students crowned as National Champion in Public Forum Debate, Extemp, Impromptu, & Original Oratory,
Coach Brooks is currently the Program Director of Brooks Debate Institute, a solo venture he started in 2018 that provides speech/debate coaching and a competitive team experience for K-12 student in the San Francisco Bay Area and all across the U.S. The majority of BDI's team is comprised mostly of middle school students from Fremont, CA and the greater Silicon Valley.
